The movie focuses on the changing attitudes of an otherwise orthodox Punjabi family. This becomes stronger with second generation Jaspinder/ Jess.
Chadha seems to have balanced the equation of the good daughter who settles down for marriage while the younger sister, Jess, is a rebel. Jess, comes across to one, a soft rebel, who is ambitious but at the same time also the humble one who will do anything for the family peace! Any implications for an ideal daughter??
In spite of her secret rendezvous at the football field and games, it has to take the permission from her father (Kher) for the last game!
To look at the movie another way, while the elder daughter follows the tradition of marriage and other things, Jess questions the conventions given to her! Hence her dilemma between her ambition and family. Perhaps her next generation will go through the trouble!
Apart from Jess, the actors chosen for the rest of the roles, fir their characters very well from the orthodox Punjabi mother to the paranoid English mother of Jules as well as, the homosexual cousin brother!
Chadha has merely touched upon sensitive issues of lesbianism/ homosexuality or boyfriends of other races, but the brief introduction is fair enough!!
Over all, its quite a good entertainment!!!!
