WALL E, a movie with a message

We went to see this movie the other day in the afternoon in a multiplex; we were told that to wait for half an hour as no ticket was sold yet. They also informed us that if the number of viewers exceeds four then only the show will be there. We patiently waited and luckily there were more than 10 , 12 actually in the multiplex with a capacity of 200 or so. I chose to see English movie after reading the review in Rottentomato web page or that of Masand in IBN live. As per Rottentomato it is rated 97% and Masand gave 4 stars, but could not stand the competition from Hindi movies in Calcutta. That was the main reason for me to see this movie in the first week of release as the next week it will vanish from the plexes.

This movie is produced by Pixar who gave us movie Finding Nemo, directed by Andrew Stanton. It is a completely animated movie without any dialogue. That is the beauty of the movie; it can be easily followed by any one.

In the present consumer based society the disposal of garbage and toxic waste is gradually becoming a menacing problem. This movie tells us that somewhere around 2100 the earth becomes inhabitable because of toxic wastes. It was decided that people should leave earth for five years in a spaceship known as Starliner and leave behind robots to clean the waste. A company known as Buy n Large purchases all the waste and puts thousands of robots known as Load Allocation Lifter Earth Class or the short form WALL E. The position was reviewed after 5 years and was found the earth was not conducive to return. The story starts in the year of 2815 when 700 years have passed. The Starliner is maintained by robots, the human are deshaped under zero gravity and can not move, they are helped by robots in their daily chores.

In the earth all those WALL Es gradually became non functional and the only surviving WALL E goes on compacting garbage. Survives by finding spare parts from the non functional one and powered by solar panels. He behaves like a human being and I instantly fell in love with him. He is alone in the earth and longs for company. He repeatedly plays the 1969 movie Hello Dolly, understands that holding hand is love. The key motif of the picture is two songs from Hello Dolly…Put on your smart cloth …..and..It only takes a moment. These two songs are played in the back ground to highlight the mood of WALL E. One has to applaud the innovative ideas, I was totally amazed by the detailing of the shack where WALL E parks himself for the night.By the way there is cock roach which is also survivor. He takes of his drag chains like as though he is hanging his gun belt, he has shelfs full of his spare parts also various knick knacks like toys, casettes, spoons, forks etc. His watching of the movie HELLO DOLLY in the TV through a CD player is real treat...I could feel lot of minds have worked to make it appear feasible for a robot to remain operative on its own programme for such a long period..amazing.

Then EVE a robot is sent from Starliner to explore whether earth has become habitable or not. It is a She, and WALL E falls in love. EVE has no emotion but she is amused. WALL E finds a tree growing, he keeps it in an old shoe. He shows it to EVE, she takes it and instantly gets deactivated. The Starliner sends a ship to bring back EVE and our hero WALL E follows her to the outer space in real hero style clinging to the ship….the rest you have to see how the things end up…I am not letting out the secret…

It is already rated high so I will not dare to rate it. It is a sensible film for thinking people. …go and watch it..the future could be that with so much automation taking place…the garbage and toxic disposal is going to become a major reason for a man made catastrophe….this movie is warning with a wry humour. As Masand said WALL E is as loveable as ET was…..yes he is…imagine a small compactor behaving sensibly..wow
