I am an ardent fan of Nagesh Kukunoor’s movies, so please read this review with tinted glasses !
Bombay to Bangkok is a short romantic comedy. Shankar is an Indian bawarchi who gets greedy when one of his customers forgets his wallet at the restaurant. He steals the money with a dream of going to Dubai and making it big. However, the thugs follow him and he is on a run. The sequence of events that follow, compel him to pose as a doctor and he lands in Bangkok as a part of the medical relief team. In Bangkok, he meets Jasmine, a sprightly Thai girl, who works at the medical camp during the day & as a masseuse during the night. Their different languages and traditions lead to amusing dialogues & awkward situations. But language is never a limiting factor in love. Love blossoms between our hero-heroine. The encounters between Shankar & Jasmine are delightfully innocent. original and heart-warming
The film has sub-plots of mafia-drugs, a don (Naseeruddin Shah in a cameo role), an aspiring rap star Jamaal Khan aka Jam-K & his psycho-babble sessions with psychiatrist Rati. These diversions dilute the impact of the main plot. Alas, what could’ve been a breezy romantic comedy turns out to be a half-hearted “also-ran” !. I wish the film had just stuck to its main theme.
From a director who gave us fabulous movies with unique stories like Hyderabad Blues, Teen Deewarein, Dor & Iqbal, B to B is good in parts but lets you down..
But we can permit such a slip-up once in a while, can’t we? What next Nagesh?
