It was one of my most awaited movies of the year. Reasons??? Its an RGV production, its an underworld flick, the promos were superb and lastly, it was supposed to be a prequel to Company which in my opinion is a classic.
D tells the tale of Deshu (Randeep Hooda) and how he reaches the topmost position in the Mumbai underworld from that of a mere mechanic. In short, it is his story, the situations he faces, the various kinds of people he meets in his journey and how he overcomes all the hurdles and oppositions to reach the pinnacle of success.
The senior members Mukarram (Yashpal Sharma) and Shabbir (Sushant Singh) of his gang do not approve of his fast rise and try hard to create obstacles in his way. But Deshu, with the help of his trustworthy friend Raghav (Chunky Paandey) overcome all those.
Despite the story being so simple and ordinary, D manages to enthrall its viewers all throughout and the end result a captivating film. A gangster film will have its share of shooting/murder scenes and D has them too but the scenes are so well written and so perfectly executed and together with natural and competent performances, D proves to be superior to other gangster films.
Vishram Sawant will surprise you with the ease and confidence with which he handles his film. Its hard to believe that he is a first time director but having said that, he is ably supported by a tight compact script and excellent background music which help create the right atmosphere. Cinematography is very realistic. The dialogues are hard hitting. So a combination of excellent background music, good cinematography and hard hitting dialogues make certain scenes memorable
- The scene where Deshu is surrounded my enemies but still manages to come out unscathed
- The scene where Deshu kills a gangster called Mangli
- The scene where Raghav is killed
- The scene where Deshu and his girlfriend are attacked
A decent pace is maintained all throughout and thankfully the 3 songs do not really obstruct the flow.
D totally belongs to Randeep Hooda. The actor is not given many long dialogues to speak, yet he makes his mark with witty one liners and his facial expression. His facial expression is his biggest strength. His dialogue delivery is excellent. The actor gets into the skin of the character and since he is a newcomer with no image and typical mannerisms, he becomes fully convincing as the ruthless, ambitious Deshu.
Chunky Paandey really surprised me with his fantastic performance. The actor proves that when he is given a good role, he can deliver. Yashpal Sharma and Sushant Singh are first rate. They are such talented actors. Goga Kapoor and Jeeva are brilliant. Rukhsar and Isha Koppikar make their impact too.
In short, D lived up to my expectations fully. The film may not be another Company but I didnt expect that either. It is a very well directed, realistically portrayed gangster film.
