This afternoon I saw Dus Kahaniyan at E-Square in Pune. I liked the film. It was different from the recent films I’ve seen. This movie comprises ten short films, each on a short story. With the advent of soaps on TV, short story writers hardly have any creative vehicle to project their talent and maybe movies like Dus Kahaniyan may open a window of opportunity.

Of the ten short films I liked “Pooranmashi” directed by Meghna Gulzar the most – a well acted poignant story. And, of course, it was a delight to watch the superb acting of Shabana Azmi and Naseerudin Shah in “Rice Plate” a subtly amusing film with a meaningful message. “Gubbare” was elevated by a gripping performance by Nana Patekar and a very lively Anita Hasnandani, seen on screen after a long time, and “Matrimony” had an interesting twist in the tale and a marvelous performance by Mandira Bedi. There were a few stylish films and a few lusty ones.

And there is this film titled “Lovedale” – I wonder who chose this title! I wish they had shot this movie at the actual Lovedale – the quaint little beautiful station on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway. The movie would certainly have looked more authentic in it’s real misty locale rather than on the Konkan Railway where it appears to have been shot. Well I’ve studied at Lovedale for six years way back in the late nineteen sixties and written a couple of fiction short stories on Lovedale too [just click the links below and read my “Lovedale Stories” I’ve reposted on my blog].

Maybe someone will make a movie on one of my Lovedale Stories in the next edition of Dus Kahaniyan! And I’m sure it will be better than the one in the present Dus Kahaniyan – Lovedale is probably the weakest story in the collection.

Though nothing great, Dus Kahaniyan is worth a watch – it’s quite absorbing and it’s different. The acting performances are good and the direction, in most cases, is quite stylish.
