Gandhi is more of a pop icon for Gen X than a historical figure and adding a more serious note to the irreverence of the Munnabhai seies is Anil Kapoor's maiden attempt. The action is scripted pretty well and makes for easy viewing as we see the subtle and not so subtle changes in the protaganist Harilal Gandhi played by Akshaye Khanna.Akshaye is a casting coup because he brings the sensitivity and the turbulence in Harilal's life alive.Darshan Jariwala who plays the Mahatma steals Akshaye's thunder in quite a few scenes. The scenes which show the strained conversations between father and son are the most memorable thing to take back from this film.Although the historical montage pastiche pieces are done seamlessly, they seem to increasingly shift the focusto the Mahatma than the supposed protaganist. It can be understood that Harilal is potrayed as a gullible good hearted man, but this is stressed so emphatically and at times literally, that it makes it hard for one to relate.Shefali Shah delivers yet another powerpacked performance as Kasturba, particularly in the scenes with the Mahatma. The production values are excellent and none of the settings at anytime seem overdone. This movie is definitely a must watch, although not a classic it is surely a step above the other movies realeased recently like partner, naqaab etc.
