‘Halla Bol’ awakens public conscience
By: Ulhas Shirke
Rajkumar Santoshi is an intelligent director. He knows how to awaken public conscience at this most appropriate time, when our people are turning more materialistic in their day to day life. No one has got time to come in the open and prevent a crime; and even if they see something serious happening around, they just watch the tamashaa. Over and above that our media is prompt enough to cover such horrifying scenes and flash them repeatedly, only to invite hostile reactions from different sections of the society. The media does its job, but the politicians are taking full advantage of such so called ‘Breaking news’. This is what the protagonist film-maker has tried to show through his latest film- ‘Halla Bol’ .

Based on the most significant Jessica Lal murder case and the events following thereafter, Rajkumar Santoshi skillfully exposes - the corrupt system, the mute spectators watching the crime and the witnesses turning hostile. He has not even spared the section of media, which he has shown more concerned about popularizing their channel and increase their TRP’s; so that they get the maximum advertisements. And, he succeeds in presenting this show in an effective manner, so as to create the desired impact on the audience.

The film’s hero Ajay Devgan is a real life successful film-star- Samir Khan, who is a witness to a murder of a young girl in a toilet block of a hotel; but chooses to remain silent, as the culprits are sons of a minister and an influential businessman. However, in due course of time, with the happening of a series of incidences, there is a sudden awakening of his conscience. He then decides to take on the corrupt system; but the power hungry politician plays his dirty tricks, to prove him wrong. This prompts the hero to turn a real protagonist, who uses his original profession of street play , in the name of Halla Bol, with the help of his mentor in the village- Sidhu( Pankaj Kapoor) , a reformed dacoit. In this mission his wife- Sneha( Vidya Balan) , his parents and the media support him.

Director –Santoshi has used only three important characters in his film ‘Halla Bol’ . They are Samir Khan-the film hero, Siddhu – the social crusader and the power hungry minister-Gaekwad. But, the manner in which he has used the sequences in the life of this real life film hero, are very impressive. The only drawback noticed is that the director, who has shown these happening in the present day situation, uses some of the formulas of 70s and 80s . And, it is for this reason that the film does not make you sit on the edge of your seat all the time, in spite of its effective theme. But, it certainly helps awaken public conscience, with some timely dialogues and sensitive scenes. Ajay Devgan is fine and performs in his own style ,but he can’t match with the director’s favourite –Sunny. Vidya Balan almost plays the part that Meenaklshi Sheshadri did in the past. But, Pankaj kapoor and Darshan Jariwala are certainly impressive through their brilliant performances.
