A lesser known love story, waiting to be narrated, a proven director,…….Jodhaa Akbar, perhaps, was one of the most awaited films of 2008.
Jodhaa Akbar is a period film of the 16th century describing the life of Emperor Akbar & Jodhaa bai. The alliance between the two was clearly a marriage of convenience. Though established for political reasons, Jalaluddin Akbar eventually falls in love for the valiant, self-respecting  & beautiful Jodhaa.

The love story between Akbar & Jodhaa is brilliantly shot with tender, subtle scenes, resplendent environments, so indicative of those times. Noteworthy among them are :The scene where Jodha cooks a Rajput meal for Akbar or the scene where Jodhaa, behind a purdah, coyly watches Akbar flex his muscles on a roof top or when Akbar gets mesmerized when Jodhaa sings a bhajan at the palace or when Jodhaa finally accepts Akbar as her husband.

These golden moments are frequently interspersed with sub-plots of animosity, jealousy, suspicion, revenge, blood & battles of the other kin… the film meanders from one plot to another. So much so, that at times, one wonders, are we watching an epic love story or a battle drama?

Hrithik Roshan as Emperor Akbar is brilliant. Watch out for the scene where he tames of a wild elephant. Aishwarya as Jodhaa bai looks royal and nothing less than a princess. The sword fight between the two is enthralling.

Gorgeous looking actors, rich and lavish sets reminding us of the grandeur of the moghul era that we read at school, spectacular palaces, stunning costumes, menacing battles, urdu shayari, melodious songs.….

The film is like an exquisite painting. It needs to be watched in theatre to experience the sheer extravaganza.
And like most paintings, it appeals more to the eyes than to the heart. Thus, if one were to ask, “would you watch it again ?”. Most of us would pause before responding and probably say “No”.
