Saw this obscure film titled Khosala Ka Ghosala (KKG). Actually it was one of the films in the DVD that I purchased to view "Omkara". Tell you what, you MUST watch this film ! Why? The reason is simple - they dont make such low budget, down to earth hilariously serious movies anymore. At least not since the days of "Golmaal", "Angoor", "Chupke Chupke" etc!
The storyline is pretty simple. Mr Khosala i.e. Anupam Kher decides to buy a plot of land in South Delhi. He buys it for 15 lakh rupees after checking the legality and other things, through a broker. After a few days when he goes to check his plot, he's flabbergasted to find it "occupied". When he approaches the broker, he coolly tells him that a certain Mr Khurana is the legal owner of the land and not Mr Khosala! When Khosala goes to meet Khurana (Boman Irani-fantastic portrayal), he accedes to his request on the condition that Khosala pay him 30 lakhs to get back his own plot!
Rest of the film revolves around how Khosala's prodigal (America bound) son manages to wrest the plot back.
The whole film tackles the problem of land grab by the land mafia and how it affects the middle class. The middle class mindset is typified by Mr Khosala when he is ready to let the plot of land go, as he is loath to approach the court and the police saying that "Hum middle claas log police aur kachehri ke chakker kaat kar saari zindagi naheen guzaar sakte". In fact the situation is so serious that what Khosala says is in fact true! The entire judiciary and the police is in the fists of land mafia. So what can a middle class man do in such cases?
The film also approaches the issue of intelligent young people leaving for greener pastuers abroad sensitively. Frustrated by the lack of opportunities in India and the existing red tapism, most educated youngster's first career choice is going abroad.
Thankfully, there are no stupid song and dance sequences during the film, save one right when the credits appear at the start of the film (Chuk de patte by Kailash Kher).
ALL IN ALL, A COMPLETE FAMILY ENTERTAINER, without the embarassing "Item" numbers etc!
