MOVIE REVIEW LIFE IN A METRO

I few days ago, I saw Mira Nairs The Namesake and after seeing the portrayal of the Trial and Tribulations of the Indian Diaspora in the land of opportunity, I was glad that I remained in India. I liked the film, especially the excellent performances by Tabu and Irfan.
Now Ive just seen a film called Metro or rather Life in a Metro. Well, Ive lived in all the Indian Metros, including the last few years in Mumbai, the setting of the film, and I couldnt identify with the characters portrayed in the film. But despite this, I found the film had the flavor of verisimilitude, the characters had a touch of authenticity and their relationships quite believable.
Do such wanton people and gratuitous relationships actually exist in Mumbai? I didnt come across any though I lived in the heart of Mumbai. Maybe I perambulated in a different simple world of my own and, if indeed people like those depicted in the film do exist, Im glad I am not one of them. I also wonder if the working life and interpersonal relationships in a call centre is like the one so effectively portrayed in the film.
Life in a Metro is an enjoyable film. The gripping narrative, lifelike characters and multiple storytelling style hold your interest till the very end. All the story tracks are vibrant and engaging except probably the Dharmendra Nafisa Ali story which seems a bit contrived and drags, though it is heartening to see that Dharmendras screen presence is as pleasing as in his heydays.
Its a slick engrossing film with innovative storytelling style and the acting is superb. Konkona, Irfan weave magic in their humorously hapless interactions, Kaykay depicting a mean streak is consistently competent, Shilpa and Kangana play their glamorous and emotional parts efficiently, though Shiney and Sharman seem underutilized.
I enjoyed the film. Its certainly a praiseworthy effort and worth a watch. It entertains, educates, conveys its message, and with a bit of tight editing can become a remarkable film. If you havent seen the film, see it, and maybe, if you live in a Metro, or work in a call centre, you may discover similar characters and relationships around you!
