Views 128 Rajat Kapoor first came into limelight as a director on debut when ‘Raghu Romeo’ received appreciation at the international film festivals, besides winning national award. But, then in his very next film ‘Mixed Doubles’ he handled a subject on sex that was not acceptable to the Indian society. In the process, he lost his credibility that he had earned till then. But, not discouraged with criticism, he tried to make a comeback as a director with a different story idea. His latest film ‘Mithya’ deals with a subject that he was holding with him for a long time. The reason for not making this film earlier , obviously could be due to financial constraints. But, finally ‘Mithya’ could see the screen, with the support that he received from his co-actors and old friends.
As claimed by Rajat kapoor, the theme of ‘Mithya’ has been inspired from a story in ‘Purana’ , the Hindu mythology. In short, it’s all about understanding the true meaning of ‘Maya’( materialism). And to prove his point and deliver the message, the director has chosen VK( Ranvir Shorey), to play an aspiring struggling actor, who comes to Mumbai to try out his luck in this industry . But, his fate takes him to a different world, only to be trapped. The reason being, he has striking resemblance to another person. It is from here onwards, he encounters bad to worst people. But, then he also finds his sympathizer in the form of a lady love - Neha Dhupia who is also lost amongst these people. The film is good in the beginning but fails to impress in the second half .
In fact, Director Rajat kapoor has handled this different theme, involving all bad men and their henchmen around , to offer a topic that’s basically related to underworld, which has been dealt by several movie makers in the past. But, he sincerely tries to show that there is no escape from this terrible world, no matter you land here by chance. Rajat has therefore projected VK as a protagonist, to prove his point as a committed filmmaker. However, the biggest mistake he has done and that is he has involved an actor like Naseeruddin Shah, to play a Gangster and his friend Vinay Pathak to play his henchman. These roles were not at all meant for talented actors like them. On the other hand, choice of Neha Dhupia has been right, which goes with the screenplay well.
Ranvir Shorey has been asked to carry the entire responsibility on his shoulders, since he plays the central character. In reality Ranvir is not a hero material, but fits well into his character, for the only reason that director Rajat Kapoor wanted to make a realistic film, with that desired impact on the sensible audience. And, he has succeeded in his attempt. The film’s supporting cast also includes other talented artistes like Saurabh Shukla, Harsh Chhaya, Brijendra Kala and Iirawati Harshe , who play their parts with authority.
To be precise, ‘Mithya’ is a film for a particular class of audience who would try to understand a film in depth and search for the director’s creativity within it. But, for others, who are looking for glamour, melodious songs and pure entertainment value, this film will not be able to meet their requirement. It’s a typical low budget art film with pace, that’s missing the commercial value. Neither it can pull the family crowd nor attract the young viewers, for the kind of treatment it receives in the screenplay. The music too, is just an average. In short, Ranvir Shorey, has done a commendable job as an actor, but he is yet to receive that recognition of a hero, as he still carries that stamp of a substitute comedian.
