Om Shanti Om is what I saw on Friday November 16, 2007. Away from my H‘ome”, in the theatre, where there was no Shanti of any kind, saying Om Om, because before entering the theatre a friend of mine had complained that this particular theatre in question is know for its power cuts. I was also warned by another friend that this movie is not so good and certainly does not provide Shanti to your soul. But still I wanted to see it myself to pass the verdict. And the verdict I pass (saying Om) is that I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Ok, the story does not make any sense to me, and the over-acting in the first part does not really tickle my senses either but it certainly tickles my funny bone and I feel that it was needed to make it look hilarious. Farah Khan is brave enough to make a movie like this. It is easy to make a movie which laughs at others but difficult to make one which laughs at one’s own industry. It is like a Board of Director of a company making a movie which makes fun of the fellow members of the same board including the MD.
The 70s are brilliantly depicted in the movie. Deepika Padukone has done a good job for a debutante. Who says models can’t? Whoever says that, this girl is here to prove them wrong. Shahrukh is impeccable and so is Farah Khan’s direction. This movie is a visual treat-with colourful costumes, opulent sets, beautiful actors, these things surely make your eyes savor the feast cooked by chef Farah Khan. The dialogues are well written and the musing is enchanting. Surprise, Arjun Rampal too seems to have made some effort in the acting department. The genius of Shreyas Talpade can be felt whenever he is on the screen.
So here I end my review saying Om! And Shanti Manoj Kumarji-no offence to you but a good laugh. Breath in, breath out and say OM!
