If you have read Othello, Omkara will look like a cheap imitation. Here is a bunch of uncouth, abusive young men who kill unknown men for unknown reasons, save for keeping the movie going. Because of Shakespearean drama, the film is engrossing, but only in parts.
Much of the movie is busy making stars out of bad mannered youth -- Saif Khan, with yellowed teeth and Ajay Devgan, the brooding gangster. The langauge is jarring and cheap. The movie lacks all of the elegance of Shakespeare.
Kareena as Desdemona is overshadowed by Bipasha Basu who has two similar songs to sing. The songs look like "Kajra Re" and Bipasha does all the things that Aishwarya did, but it seems that is going to be the general trend for some time to come.
On the whole, it is one of the worst movies to come out of Bollywood. Such a cheap and abusive movie, that degrades women in its language, should never have been passed by the censors. But we live in strange times, when abuse is taken as literature, and abusive language is taken as humour.
Avoid the movie; read Othello instead.
