I think the raison d’être of Sarkar Raj was explained in the last few minutes of the film where Amitabh reveals the plot to Aishwarya.
I'm inclined to think that this was the concept based on which the first couple of hours of the movie was made. However the first couple of hours is an extension of the first Sarkar movie and nothing novel in that.
The gangster movies (if I may call Sarkar so) have become a commodity long time back and if there is any value-add, it is only through cast and not by story anymore. Ram Gopal Verma managed to add the value to this commodity using Bachhan clan and everyone excelled. I bet Aishwarya wouldn’t have taken this role if it is not for the fact that her husband and F-i-L were both involved and that she probably would have thought to carry the mantle on, in true filmy style.
RGV has a reputation of giving as many twists and turns to surprise you in his movies and he lives up to that in this movie too, though the plot was a little unconvincing with in-your-face denouement.
What was hilarious was the role Aishwarya gets into in the end – I thought that was amazingly comical.
If you have watched the first Sarkar and forgot about it, this movie will remind you everything about that movie - the cast, locales, dark greenish settings, background sitar (or veena?), killings etc.
If you remember that movie very well, I wouldn’t advise watching this- there is no novelty; except ofcourse, unless you are fan of one of the four gangsters (Amithabh, Abhishek, Aishwarya or RGV). Instead, mow your lawn, vacuum your house, prepare a dessert for dinner, and if you have kids, take them out to a park for evening snacks.
RGV is a pioneer in gangster movies - so many people have copied his genre and so many films have been made by RGV himself, that it has become a commodity and nothing more than a humdrum.
I think RGV has to get out of his bhoot-pret and gangster movies - how about making a thriller for kids?
I would rate this as 'just struggling to meet average score', which is 2.5.
