U ME AUR HUM
NP Mohapatra
‘Some times it is difficult to cross the distance between the two individuals who are nearest to each other’
And that is the opening quote of the film U ME AUR HUM during casting. The casting itself has been innovative, flashing the quotes on love from time immemorial. The drama starts with the casual conversation of Father (Ajay) and son. The boy is having an instant crush with a girl. They (father and the son ) challenge each other to ‘patao’ their respective girls and Ajay starts applying impressing tactics with a middle aged lady Piya sitting at a distant table (Kajol ).
The intruder hero becomes the storyteller. The story narrator, Ajay keeps on dropping episodes, which revolves around the luxury liner STAR CRUISE. Those who have not been lucky to cruise in a luxury liner, U ME AUR HUM provides a free feast for eye to draw your conclusion about luxury liners consisting of semi nude blondes moving all around every where in deck, swimming pool and bars. The guests are ‘always on liquor’ like ‘always on internet’ and juicy sorties are uttered effortlessly and without any inhibition in the liner rooms, salsa classes or bars.
And Ajay starts impressing Kajol as a salsa gold medal champion, who is a cruiser liner hostess .He stalks, follows and sneaks in to her room, reads her personal diary ‘making of possibilities’, loves dogs and chocolates, and becomes successful in winning confidence of Kajol.
The Alzheimer’s disease comes just before the intermission when Kajol forgets her name, address, phone number for a moment while returning from mall after shopping. And that too when she bangs against Ajay’s car.
Kajol’s expression during that moment is unbeatable. She again proves that she is best and second to none in the critical twixt of the story, whether her gazing scene of the lizard attacking the insect, and forgetting about her child in the midway who drowns in the bathtub, or skipping with full vigor while she is pregnant, she portrays the character completely. And while Ajay shifts her to Alzheimer’s /psychiatric hospital, her reactions as well as when he(Ajay) goes to take her back home, her expressions, as if she was the patient, is extraordinary.
Some of the scenes are situation-emotional .The casual mention of the immortal lines “yuhin koi milgayatha..” in the group expression has been one of the memorable scenes.
Ajay excels when he reiterates that every individual is selfish, and every body has a self-defence mechanism. And when he realizes, he rushes to bring back Kajol to home .He proves that “ To err is human, to forgive is divine.’
THOSE WHO ARE FAMILY ORIENTED, SERIOUS IN HUMAN TOUCH AND RELATIONSHIP, THE FILM IS WORTH WATCHING A COUPLE OF TIMES.For couples,it is amust.
