This is a supwerb movie, and although a great admirer of Satyajit Ray's masterpieces , I find it even superior.
Not being Indian, born in France and living in United States, I can only say, that having attended the movie several times, not once at the end have I not see the attendance deeply moved.
Often the public will stay and watch the credits in silence at the end. Then I have seen people gathering in the streets and discussing it. Everyone agrees how deeply moving it is and for some, even transforming. The love for the Earth and its people from Deepa Mehta is the catalyst of this movie. The mixture of humor and the impassive neutrality on the part of Deepa Mehta, simply showing the unfolding events, without any judgement on any is superb. But definitely it is her love and compassion for the people, and the soaring tribute to the beauty of the river, and its spiritual implication, are what here, defines for us an extraordinary memory.
