GURU
Astory of a villager, a visionary, and a leader. The movie fails to establish any of these in the two hour forty minute period. Maniratnam ventures to make yet another period based movie and hence you see many repeats from his earlier works. There is nothing fresh about the movie or the scenes as you have already seen Nayagan, Bombay, and Iruvar. The sets, the dialogues, and the photographyare too artificial to make anything look real. Even some good characters loose to stay put in your mind.
The movietakes off just 5 minutes before INTERMISSION, which should have taken place in the 10th minute after the movie's beginning. In the first half, everyone is left to wonderthe colossal waste of effort by the artists, production team, andthe time spent by the audience to patiently sit through it. As the second half carries towards the climax, the viewer is challenged again with unnecessary song and dance sequences. The climax court room sequences arewith artificialbuilt-up and the scene looses finally due to very poor dialogues, which should have actually been strong enough to hold the whole movie. Gurubhai provides a few statements and says he has saved half a minute of the 5 minute time he's given, which is the only comedy track in the whole movie.
The only good elements in the movie has been from the performances of Abishek, Mithun da, and Maddy. The trio has given their best in portraying their characters. Aishwarya Rai doesn't suit the character and tends to irritate by over-doingthrough out the movie, particularly the climax court room scenes. As for the music, the title card indicates A.R. Rehman's name.
There is a very likely chance that every Maniratnam fan will watch this movie, for you don't find any other good reason why this movie has to be seen.
