"Amudha..happy birthday."..The whole family sing the world's most famous song.It's her ninth birthday.
Let's say the truth,her mom and dad decide on that date."What's the truth"?....Amudha gets lots of gift and Rs.fifty from her grandpa,she finds herself tasting the moon kept in fridge,she is all dressed up to go to the temple...she is taken to the temple by her mom and dad...after that she is taken to the beach by her dad...she is in a jolly sporty mood..our moods are upset when the matter is spilled so too the young girl,when her dad says "you are not born us".
Maangulam-Srilanka,a wedding procession is on its way to the temple,to settle the final matter.When it is settled Shyama-the bride and Dileepa-groom, find themselves in cloud nine.An exciting first night,their family life goes on well, when one day Shyama says she is carrying and she is also ready to carry seven more stored up in the memory.Dileepa is not interested in the child..until version peace is restored in their place.Suddenly one day he dissapears.Cartiges,bomb shells start bombarding this small village.Dileepa is totally cut off...and shyama has a nine month old child in her womb..waiting is of no use...for the child she finds herself in a boat going to a refugees camp,Rameswaram ,India..one person says he has seen Dileepa shot dead.Vengeance, starts to take a growth inside Shyama.She finally lands and has herself laboured.But, leaves the child in search of her vengence.But, Why come to Srilanka?
"Kudai", a short story based on this incident gets published written by Mr.Thiruchelvan, who identifies himself under a ghost name "Indhra".Mr.Thiruchelvan lives with his sister in a portion behind Indhra's(his wife in coming years) house.She asks him whether he is going to adopt the child..when he approaches the adoption centre, a big no, is given to him as he is a bachelor.He seeks Indhra's permission to marry him and give the child a mother's license.Amudha, brings them under one roof and they start a new married life with the child,Amutha.
Amutha is found one day in Perambur bunking her class and one day after learning the fact that she was born in Rameshwaram,she goes there.
Thiruchelvan and family, are shocked.Amudha wants to see her original mother.
To patch up his guiltiness,Thiruchelvan and Indhra fly with Amudha to Sri lanka.Amudha finds the place interesting, a shot which shows Amudha impersonating a giant sleeping buddha.Amudha has 20 questions for her original mother.Amudha is taken to Maangulam, and shown how the area is.They find her after skirmishes and confrontations."Please take the child back to India,as I am fighting for freedom".
The story goes around Amudha,the hero of the film is Amudha.The character is done by P.S.Keerthana.The couples Mr.Thiruchelvan and Mrs.Indhra Thiruchelvan and Mr.Dileeba and Mrs.Shyama are played by Madhavan , Simran and Chakravarthy ,Nandita Doss respectively.Mani Ratnam has come out with a supreme bonanza.You have the love for the child, when you come out of the auditorium.Thank god,the music is melodious.
