Featured Marudhamalai Movie Review

by Indian Cinema

A honest cop on a mission to nail a local daadha is no new story in Kollywood. But director Suraj has laced it with right mix of comedy, glamour, sentiments and loads of action in the right proposition that may work out well with the masses.
Keeping Arjun's 'action hero' image in Tamil cinema, Suraj has woven a script that demands the actor to perform daredevil stunt sequences at regular intervals. It is a 'mass' movie sans any logic or reasoning.
In a nutshell, Marudhamalai is about an upright young cop single-handedly wiping out goondas and rowdies with his lethal fists.
Marudhamalai (Arjun), (son of honest Nasser and Kalairani), manages to join the police force. He is posted to Nachiyarpuram, a stronghold of a local dadha Maasilamani alias Maasi (Lal). Masi ensures that the election process has come to a standstill for the past 16 years.
Enters Election Commissioner Suryanarayanan (Raghuvaran) on a mission to conduct the elections. The turn of event leaves Arjun taking up cudgels against Maasi. He challenges to end Maasi's atrocities and ensure peaceful elections in the village. How he achieves his mission forms the climax.
All said, the first half belongs to Vadivelu, who plays Arjun's superior officer (Encounter Ekambaram). His expressions and dialogues make sure the audience erupt in laughter. Nila makes a brief appearance as Arjun's ladylove.
Arjun looks young and bubbles with energy. Comfortable in stunt sequences, his attempts at comedy work out well. Lal with his menacing eyes fits the bill well. The rest of the cast includes Raghuvaran, Bose Venkat, Nasser, Kalairani among others. Imman's music is a letdown and he has come up with loud numbers.
Suraj has tried at rendering a commercial masala entertainer. At places the movie reminds one of films like Saamy, Kireedom and Mudhalvan. An entertainer, on the whole.
