The reason for growing nuclear families and the increasing old age homes has been neatly conveyed through Onbathu Roopai Nottu directed by Thankar Bachan.
The director has managed to convey a strong message and has tried his best in doing that on the big screen.
The story goes this way: Sihamani (Sathish, the young boy who played as a young actor Parthiban in Azhagi) works in a factory and to observe his father’s death anniversary, he goes to his native village Paruthikottai where he meets Madhavar Padayachi (Sathya Raj), a big landlord.
Introducing himself to Madhavar he asks him on how he came to Chennai. From then, the story rolls back to the times when Madhavar with an unshaven face and tattered clothes becomes a wealthy man after having no money buy even a bus ticket.
Madhavar Padayachi (Sathya Raj) and Velayi (Archana) are a wealthy family in Paruthikottai and Madhavar is respected by all. The couple has three sons and they are employed in their father’s land.
Due to Madhavar’s strict attitude the sons along with their wives are against him. And finally, one night, a tussle between the father and sons breaks out and Madhavar and Velayi go out of their house to lead a different, lonely life.
A dejected Madhavar facing all odds manages to reach his long time friend’s Hajabhai (Nasser) and his wife Kameela (Rohini) home and Hajabhai, hearing their story, asks Madhavar to look after his poultry farm nearby. Do Madhavar and Velayi go back to their hometown or do the sons come forward in looking for them is well conveyed in the movie.
Actress Archana as Sathyaraj’s wife has done a good performance but screams at the top of her voice on various occasions. Nasser and Rohini as Hajabhai and Kameela have done a commendable job.
However, Sathya Raj steals the show and the movie would be another feather in his cap. The actor has lived upto expectations and has managed to live as Padayachi, a loving husband, a responsible father, a sincere friend and a caring grandfather.
The music score has been done by Bharathwaj and the song ‘Marghazhi’ is melodious. Though the movie lacks pace and tests your patience in many occasions, the good camera work is worthy of mention. The director who has himself handled the camera has brought some pleasing scenes of the remote village.
On the whole, the movie is a lesson for those young ones who have sent their parents to an old age home.
