Director Vasanth is one of the most respected directors in Kollywood and when he comes up with a movie the viewers will obviously be interested in seeing what the ace director has come up with. And if the music is also a hit then the theatre should surely see a sell out crowd. Amidst humongous expectations SM Vasanth comes up with his latest thriller, Sathaam podathey, which has a chartbuster music rendered by Yuvan shankar raja.
The film is about Padmapriya who marries Nithin satya and lead a happy life, but only after a few months does she come to know that her husband is over possessive and impotent. His impotency comes as a shocker to the lady as she loves kids. Many disturbing events follows thanks to her over protective hubby and finally she decides to call it a shot and files divorce. But Nithin pledges to get back together. Many months pass and Padmapriya falls for her brothers friend Prithviraj who happens to be a fun loving, enjoyable character. And they get married but the happiness in their lives is short lived as Nithin enters their life again. What will the psychotic ex-husband do now? Check it out in a theatre near you.
Calling it a suspense-thriller is not right, as many movies have explored this story and we know exactly what will happen next, but it does disturb you and that is where the director scores. Many scenes bear the Vasanth touches which is one of the major pluses for the movie. But the movie does face many problems, and one of the major factors which might dampen its prospects at the box-office is its slow narrative. The Tamil audience will not be patient enough to sit through this slow movie, but thanks to the increase in the multiplex audience the movie might get its audience. Many scenes which are supposed to be comic relief, hardly makes you laugh, one of the major example is the special appearance by Premji amaran, an actor who made all of us laugh in Chennai 28 is wasted in a role.
In the technical aspects cinematography and music stands tall, first timer Dinessh kumars camera work is extraordinary. He has a bright future. Music by Yuvan shankar raja is one of the major asset of the movie but some songs crop up at unnecessary places which totally spoils the fun. Editor could have done a better job; the movie would have been much crisper if it is cut by at least 10 -15 minutes.
Performance wise, the movie is of high order Prithviraj as a fun loving person with a heart of gold has come up with a gold medal winning performance, he is a complete natural and he dances well too, an actor to watch out for. Padmapriya excels in a role which gives her enough scope to explore her acting histrionics, and she makes full use of it. But the person who steals the show is Nithin satya as a cowardice psycho who gives a performance of his life time, a revelation to say the least. Rest of the cast too comes up with a natural performance.
On the whole the movie will be have its acceptors and adversaries but one cant deny that the movie was directed well. At the box-office the movie would fare well in the multiplex but will not have a long run in the single screens.
Verdict - A disturbing tale of love and obsession.
