I saw the Telugu version of Bharani (2007) and the movie is worth watching. We are normally wary of watching dubbed versions of movies and with good reason too. We have seen time and time again how some producers really ruin some artistic movies in the name of dubbing - just look at the dubbed Telugu versions of 300 or Alexander and you will have to agree! But this movie has been dubbed well, barring a few scenes. But the main plus point of the movie is undoubtedly the power-packed performance of the tall, swarthy, fit and handsome actor from Kollywood - Vishal! He just steals your hearts away with his empathic portrayal of the eponymous hero and that itself is a good reason to watch this movie.
The plot of the story has nothing new about it - it has been played again and again on our silver screens. But fortunately this same old story has been retold in a poignant way. Also the director never loses his firm grip on the narration - there are no intolerably melodramatic scenes or too gory violence. This is a good family movie with an unmistakable stress on the value and strength of blood relations and other familial bonds. Blood is surely thicker than water, the movie says and, luckily, says so with little blood shed!
Vishal promises a lot as a young nascent actor and also keeps his promises! Perhaps what strikes one the most about him is his down-to-earth nature that seems to leap out of the skin of the characters he gets into on the screen. Also one cannot but notice that the characters that come his way seem to be tailor-made for him, totally congruent with his mannerisms. That does not imply that he lacks versatility. He is really different and his individuality attracts you. In action scenes, he rocks with his passionate expressions and energetic movements. In emotional scenes, he makes you silent. (Did i not notice my "neighbour" at theatre quickly brush away his tears?!)
The actress, who is a debutant (I gather she is a debutant!) disappoints you with her lackadaisical performance. She cannot convey anything by her expressions and cannot dance too. (And looks chubby?!!) One cannot help thinking how some others might have done better in her role (As for example Meera, who has already acted with Vishal?).
Other actors, including Prabhu,Nasser and others from Kollywood have all performed well and have done justice to their roles. Special mention should be made of the actress who acts as Prabhu's wife, the cocky wife who comes to her senses in the end. (Sorry, don't know her name. Guess it's Nadia?) She looks beautiful and also excels in her role. Nasser, who did some positive characters, like theone in the latest blockbuster of the "charming Prince" - Mahesh Babu, has acted well, but many might love him as a more positive character.
Passing on to the plot,I don't intend to include any spoiler in here (Sorry! Let's support the movie industry by watching the movies at theatres!). But here is a short intro, if you will:
This movie is about two families and the feud between them. Vishal, who stays with uncle Prabhu, meets one girl from the rival family and he decides to teach her a lesson. But soon he falls for her and she too begins loving him. But Vishal and the girl gets into hot water as some of his pranks cross the limit. This adds to the animosity and hatred between the families. But, both Vishal and the girl (and of course, those in Vishal's family) long to see both the families reunited in friendship. Then Vishal discovers that there is a valid reason for the feud. He (and the audience) are in for a shock. Now he must reunite the two families, for it turns out that they are also relatives ...
The music is a let down and there is not a single song that you will carry out of the hall. The movie on the whole is a wholesome family entertainer and I strongly recommend it. Go and watch this movie, watch Vishal!
